JOB DESCRIPTION



 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To clean and provide a neat and orderly building and to assist the church in it's many ministries.

RELATIONSHIPS:

The custodian is directly responsible to the pastor and has access to the Ministry Team of Personnel through the liaison person. The custodian is also accountable to the Ministry Team of Trustees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

a) The custodian is expected to clean the church weekly and have it in good order for Sunday worship: dust, sweep, vacuum, clean restrooms, kitchen, windows in the foyer, etc.
b) Once a week the custodian is expected to empty wastebaskets and set out garbage for the trash hauler. The recyclables should also be set out. Replace plastic liners in wastebaskets as needed.
c) Set up for meetings during the week as needed. The custodian should check the calendar in the office for meeting schedules. Notes will be left on a pegboard in custodian’s room for specific requests.
d) The custodian should keep restrooms supplied with toilet paper, soap, and paper towels as needed. The custodian should also change light bulbs.
e) The custodian informs the secretary of needed custodial supplies.
f) The custodian should do any small repairs as needed and advise the Trustees of any building repair or maintenance needs.
g) Large, annual clean-up tasks should be directed to the Trustees for a church-wide clean-up day.
h) Funerals — The custodian is expected to clean the church before and after funerals. The custodian should set up the church for the funeral as directed by the pastor.
i) Weddings — The bride and groom will furnish the custodian with a work order as to how the church should be set up for their wedding. The custodian is expected to clean the church before and after the wedding. The custodian will be paid directly by the bride and groom per the fee established by the Trustees.
j) When the church is rented by an outside group (see Building Use Policy), the organization or individuals using the church will pay the custodian directly for his/her services. They will also make a damage deposit with the church. Following the event, the custodian will inspect the premises and determine how the deposit will be refunded, and consult as necessary with the chairperson of the Trustees.
k) The Ministry Teams of Trustees and Personnel suggest that the custodian do “normal” cleaning (see a & b above) each week, plus concentrate on deep cleaning of one room each month on a rotating basis (windows, cobwebs, corners, stain removal)
l) The custodian shall have snow shoveled from the sidewalks before 8 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

HOURS:

The custodian may work at his/her own convenience, an average of 15 hours per week.

SALARY:

Proposed by Personnel, approved by the Ministry Team of Finance and the Common Table. The pay schedule is twice a month, on the 15th and the last day of the month.  Time cards must be turned into the pastor with his/her signature.

VACATION/SICK LEAVE:

a. There is no paid sick leave, vacation, or holidays for part-time staff, but Personnel will be sensitive to requests for days off.
b. Substitute personnel for the custodian — the custodian will find their own substitute  to clean the church during the time they are away. A list of approved substitutes will  be provided to the custodian, by Personnel.
c. Requests for days off must be submitted to the pastor and Personnel liaison fourteen (14) days in advance (however, Personnel will be sensitive to cases involving an  emergency in which case the pastor and/or Personnel liaison should be contacted).

TERMINATION PROCEDURE:

a. The custodian is required to present a written notice to the pastor and Personnel liaison a minimum of fourteen (14) days prior to the date of termination.
b. Fourteen days notice will be given to a staff member by the Personnel liaison in the event of involuntary termination.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS:

The pastor or the designated Personnel liaison.

EVALUATION:

The custodian’s performance will be evaluated annually by the pastor in cooperation with the Personnel liaison and the Ministry Team of Trustees. The Personnel liaison will meet with the custodian on an annual basis to review and revise the custodian’s work responsibilities.

PASTORAL CHANGE:

In the event of a pastoral change, all staff positions will be reviewed within 90 days of the change.
